How do I capture video images and compress them into MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 formats?
First, you need hardware that can capture video images. Popular video devices through which video can be obtained are a video capture card, a TV turner card, PC camera, or a digital camcorder connected to IEEE 1394 ("Firewire") port. You can connect your TV cable line, TV antenna, VCR, or analog camcorder to a capture card or TV turner card. Video capture come in 2 forms: PCI card or USB. (Most PC cameras are USB based.) With one of the above pieces of hardware, you can capture video images and turn them into AVI files using software that comes with the hardware.
The main problem with an AVI file is its huge file size. Even as little as several minutes of AVI encoding requires a very large hard disk. The better solution is to compress AVI files into an MPEG format. The program used to do this is called "honestech MPEG Encoder 4.0" It has the advantage of greatly reducing the file size without compromising image quality. For example, it is possible to compress an AVI file into MPEG format, reducing it to 1/20th of its original size!

What are the differences between AVI and MPEG?
AVI stands for Audio Video Interleaving. It is not a definition on compression but a rule on file formatting. It is primarily used with the Microsoft Windows operating systems.
Its main problem is its huge file size. Therefore several companies have developed their own procedure for compressing AVI files. MJPEG, Cinepark, and Indeo from Intel are some of the popular methods used to compress AVI files. They use the "intracoding" method for compression and are widely used to edit video images frame by frame. But they are inferior to MPEG in terms of compression ratio, image quality and compatibility.
MPEG is an abbreviation of Moving Picture Experts Group, one of the international standard organizations. MPEG is a rule concerning file format and compression method. Since it is an international standard, it is compatible with several operating systems including Windows. Many consumer devices such as CD player and DVD player support MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats. This makes MPEG easy to use. The MPEG compression ratio is very high because it uses intercoding, a superior compression technique to intracoding.

Which of the full motion file formats (MPG, AVI, MOV, QT, RM) has the best image quality and the smallest file size.
The MPG file format is clearly the winner. It has the highest image quality and smallest file size. MPG uses high efficiency compressing algorithms to shrink files while maintaining the highest image quality. In general, an MPG file size is smaller than that of a compressed or uncompressed AVI file. MOV and QT file formats are full motion video standards used by Apple operating systems. Their file size is not much different from that of AVI. Finally, RealPlayer uses a file format called Real Media (RM). Its compression ratio is much higher than the file types mentioned above but suffers from poor image quality.

| •
Why some AVI files cannot be compressed into MPEG?
Since the AVI format does not have a universal standard, it can use different compression methods ? some of which cannot be processed into MPEG. This is true not only with "honestech MPEG Encoder" but also with most of other MPEG encoder products. Therefore, if the file is not in a generally used AVI format, it might be impossible to convert it to MPEG.
Note: If you encounter the message "input avi audio must be uncompressed PCM!" , it means that the AVI file should not contain compressed audio. honestech MPEG Encoder can handle uncompressed 8- or 16-bit PCM audio sampled at 11.025, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, or 48 kHz.
|
| •
